The Summer Conference: a place to unwind, restore and renew.

The Summer Conference has been a tradition since the early 1960s when Michio and Aveline Kushi held the first macrobiotic summer camp on Long Island with George Ohsawa as a special guest. In the 1970s, it was held under the auspices of the East West Foundation at Amherst College. In recent years, the conference was sponsored by the Kushi Institute and held at colleges, universities, and convention centers throughout New England and the Eastern Seaboard. For the last three years of the Kushi Institute, the event was held in Becket.

The Macrobiotic Summer Conference is now sponsored by Planetary Health, Inc., a nonprofit founded in 2001 by Alex Jack, Edward Esko, Bettina Zumdick, and other macrobiotic associates with the support of Michio and Aveline Kushi and Shizuko Yamamoto, a noted shiatsu teacher, counselor, and author.

Planetary Health sponsors Amberwaves, a grassroots network that has worked with Lundberg Family Farms, Rep. Dennis Kucinich, and other colleagues to successfully prevent the introduction of GMO rice and wheat and strives to protect the natural food supply from global warming, climate change, and other challenges.

Planetary Health circulates the seasonal Amberwaves newsletter, publishes books and CDs on diet and health, sponsors the Amberfest music festival, participates in Earth Day activities, offers dietary guidelines for global health crises (see our web site, sponsors the Online Macrobiotic Winter Conference, and partners with researchers on macrobiotic medical studies.
